Moved Again! Woohoo!
Probably no one will notice, but uhhhh, in case any future historians are interested, I am publishing this post to note that I am moving my blog to Bear today!
I've been using Substack for over two years now, but the vibes surrounding that service have been a little weird lately. Plus they're still trying to have their own version of Twitter on the homepage and nobody needs that. (Remember that one week where we thought Substack could be a viable candidate for a Twitter replacement?) All that aside, I really feel no attachment to what they offer. Does my blog really need to be considered a "newsletter?" I mean if I had readers who were paying me, that'd be pretty sick, of course, no doubt about that, but I never have seriously tried to make that happen. I send my words into the void because it's fun.
Of course before Substack I had a Wordpress.com site. But... eh, it had laid dormant for a couple years and Wordpress just felt so crusty by then. Technically I wrote a post or two on Medium as well. And I had a Blogger before I moved to Wordpress, and a Tumblr, and then there was my Club Penguin Wordpress that I had when I was 12, and my original Blogger which was also about Club Penguin.... That's unimportant.
Why am I optimistic about Bear Blog? Well it's exactly the sort of thing I'm looking for. I can get a site that doesn't look like it's from 2010 and start writing for free! It's the basics, it's minimalistic, but that's exactly what's great about it. It's free of all the various junk those bigger sites try to throw on you. And I still don't have to figure out how to host a site for myself.
I am moving my Substack posts over. Sure I think posts I wrote two years ago could be better, but I am proud of what I have built in this time and want to keep it going. Now, this process is a bit boring, because uh-oh, I gotta take out the silly Substack subscribe buttons! Most images aren't going to make it over, at least initially. But I'll try to get all the words over soon at least.
(Update: Whyyy did I write so many long posts last year).
You know what else really bugged me about Substack? macOS has the shortcut command + ` to switch between windows (when multiple windows of an application are open). The Substack editor overrides it. You can't do that bro!!
Anyway. Like I said, I'm bringing the posts over. Of course, again, there's no one actually anticipating this change, but I will write as if someone is! Woohoo!
(Update 2: OH MY GOODNESS FINALLY DONE BRINGING THOSE OVER well like I said mostly the images are gone but eh I can bring some more back later but I probably won't)
